Robert O’Brien Fuentes, MD, FACP, graduated the College of Medicine of the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center, Brooklyn, New York, in 1975. He completed a one year internship at Harlem Hospital, New York City. The following year he completed the first year of a residency in psychiatry at the Institute of Living, Hartford, Connecticut. During that time he discovered his true calling was in internal medicine and he completed two years in the internal medicine residency at Norwalk Hospital, Norwalk, Connecticut, followed by a one year fellowship in diabetes and metabolism at the Joslin Clinic and New England Deaconess Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Fuentes then practiced in the Southwest Suffolk Health Center in Patchogue, New York, for two years and in the emergency department of Brookhaven Memorial Hospital, Patchogue, New York, for an additional two years. After taking over a thirty year old internal medical practice in Massapequa, New York, he created an outpatient diabetes care center. He joined Mid-Island Internal Medicine Consultants, Bethpage, New York, in 1993. The group expanded in 1996 to become Island Medical Group. |
